Butoh involves a journey into the cosmic unknown. The artist uses Butoh as the vehicle to explore the depths of the collective subconscious, confronting inner fears, while embracing ambiguity and non-identity, to express the ineffable through the body and movement.

The practice of butoh begins with the abandonment of identity and from that the soul can begin to radiate out from the body. Malleable like clay; the performance shares the challenge to continuously rediscover the body’s intrinsic ability to move in its most desocialized form. This requires a deep surrender to thoughtlessness and a reception to the spontaneous response of one’s body.

The process of remembering body, transcending body and submitting to purposelessness in bodily expression is the foundation from which one can begin to understand and communicate through Butoh and offer a mirror to its viewer.

It is both an unforgettable and divine doorway into the essence of the unknown. It is the motion and manifestation of life’s innate expression in search of revealing the hidden sides of the soul for us to better understand ourselves. Perhaps beginning with resistance, the performance never fails to reveal the grace held within the expression of our raw human experience when engaging with the infinite self.
